Immediate payments are credits initiated from a consumers account 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, via the consumer’s banking application. An Immediate Payment clears and settles in real or near real-time (i.e., seconds, not minutes, hours, or days).
Immediate Payment allows you to pay your tolls in real-time using your bank (checking or savings) account, ensuring that your tolls are paid promptly.
You can make an Immediate Payment by logging into your NJ E-ZPass account online or through the mobile app. Select the toll you wish to pay designating your preferred bank account to initiate the payment request then complete the payment by approving the payment request from your secure banking application.
Immediate Payment helps you avoid potential late fees, ensures your tolls are paid on time, and keeps your account in good standing.
  • Instant Transactions: Immediate Payment allows for near-instantaneous fund transfers between bank accounts. This means that payments are processed and settled at once, offering users control of payment timing and transparency of payment settlement and account balances.
  • No Need for Preloading: With Immediate Payment, there is no need to pre-load or add funds to an account in advance. Payments can be made directly from the payer’s bank account to the Agency’s account, eliminating the need for account funding.
  • Real-Time Confirmation: Immediate Payment supplies real-time confirmation of payment receipt. Both the payer and the Agency can see the transaction’s status instantly, which is especially useful for verifying that a payment has been successfully received.
  • Simplified Payment Process: By creating an Immediate Payment account, the user reduces the number of steps required to make a payment and avoids waiting for funds to clear.
  • Enhanced Security: Immediate Payment transactions are highly secure and adhere to strict authentication and encryption standards, providing a payment channel that is well known to the user, reducing the risk of fraud or unauthorized access.
  • 24/7 Availability: The Immediate Payment system operates 24/7 including funds transfer, giving the user confidence when the payment is completed, allowing them to initiate payments at any time, including outside of traditional banking hours.
  • Reduced Costs: Immediate Payment can be cost-effective for both payers and Agencies, as it eliminates some of the processing and exception handling fees (NSF) associated with traditional payment methods.
You cannot make an Immediate Payment using a credit card. Immediate Payment is associated with a bank account (checking or savings) only.
  • You can pay Toll Bills and Unbilled Tolls.
  • You can select which Toll Bills and Unbilled Tolls to pay.
  • Each selected item must be paid for in full.
  • You can reject the Immediate Payment request via your banking institution’s online platform.
  • Initial Notification: When an account holder incurs a toll charge that has not been paid, they may receive an initial notification of the unpaid toll. This notification can be an email, letter, or notification through a mobile app or online account. When toll charges have reached 30 days or $50 a Toll Bill will be delivered electronically to Toll by Plate enrolled account holders, or by mail to non-account holders.
  • Timeframe Before Violation: The timeframe before an unpaid toll becomes a violation is currently 60 days from the initial Toll Bill.
No, only Toll Bills and Unbilled Tolls can be paid through Immediate Payment.
The waiver of any fee or penalties can be requested using the current online dispute function.
  • Individual Accounts: For personal Immediate Payment accounts, it is common for the account to be in the name of the individual who owns the bank account.
  • Authorized User: Some financial institutions may allow authorized user to access and use a Bank account for Immediate Payment, even if the Bank account is not in their name. In such cases, the user authorized by their Bank are granted permission to conduct transactions on behalf of the account holder.

Yes, Immediate Payment can be used for all DRJTBC agency tolls processed through your Immediate Payment account, including both standard and video tolls.
No. You must pay the entire amount by the prescribed deadline to avoid additional fees.
You can avoid receiving Toll Bills entirely by opening an Immediate Payment account. Immediate Payment customers enjoy the convenience of having all tolls, including those from Toll-by-Plate locations, available in their account for Immediate Payment. You can sign up for an account by visiting www.ezpassnj.com or using the official NJ E-ZPass Mobile App.
The funds are credited to the tolling agency immediately.
Yes. You may register for a Toll by Plate account via the NJ E-ZPass website or Mobil App. Toll Bill recipients can use the QR code on their Toll Bill to sign up for an Immediate Payment account.
The payment request can be rejected via your banking platform.
You can determine if your bank is participating by simply entering your banks routing number when beginning the payment experience. If the bank is not participating in Immediate Payments, you will be immediately notified, and you can continue to make an ACH payment or pay via credit card.

If your bank does not support Immediate Payment, you can still make toll payments using alternative methods such as a credit or debit card or make a standard bank payment which will be debited from your bank account within the next 3 business days.


Additionally, you may want to contact your bank to ask if and when they plan to support Immediate Payment.

During account registration it will be determined if your banking institution is participating in Immediate Payments. If they are not, you will not be able to create an account, and you will be unable to make an Immediate Payment.
Yes, you will receive a confirmation via email or within the NJ E-ZPass Mobile App once your payment is successfully processed.
If you choose not to make an Immediate Payment, your toll will be charged to your NJ E-ZPass account according to the standard billing cycle. However, prompt payment can help you avoid any delays or issues.
Immediate Payment is designed for real-time transactions. Payments cannot be scheduled for a future date; they must be made at the time of the toll.

No. If the transaction has failed/timed out/declined due to technical reasons, NJ E-ZPass shall not bear any liability to compensate the same in the form of interest or actual amount requested for Immediate Payment.
